MBC is beginning the new year of its Monday-Tuesday slot with a sageuk and it’s titled Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People. The previous drama to occupy this timeline was low rated Night Light (which I’m planning to check out) — not its fault as it was against rating winner Romantic Teacher Doctor Kim. Anyway, Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People is set in the Joseon times and has famous folk hero Hong Gil Dong at its center.
Yoon Kyun Sang plays the titular hero who is known to steal from the rich and give to the poor, like Robin Hood. In the case of this show, the hero will be a thief but not of material goods, he will steal people’s hearts by his good and righteous nature. Kim Ji Suk (Oh Hae Young Again) takes up the role of King Yeonsangun, who was a tyrant. This will be a tale of the fight between the good hero supporting the citizens and the cruel king. Kim Sang Joong (City Hunter) plays Hong Gil Dong’s father, Honey Lee (Please Come Back Ahjussi) stars as king’s consort whose first love is our hero and Chae Soo Bin (Moonlight Drawn By Clouds) is the leading lady of the drama, playing a young widow who wants to take revenge on the king for her husband’s death.
The cast is solid here and story seems epic. But I’m not a huge fan of any of the actors. I’ve liked Yoon Kyun Sang in his previous roles (namely Doctors and Pinocchio) but not too excited for Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People. The drama is directed by the PD of Kill Me, Heal Me and written by the writer of King’s Daughter, Soo Baek Hyang. It begins tomorrow.
