In the milieu of so many historical dramas, these kind of shows with modern setting feel like a breath of fresh air. Well, one can call Empire Of Gold a kind of period drama if we take its span of 20 years into consideration; as the drama that marks Go Soo‘s return to TV after three years, narrates the story of a chaebol empire, covered from 1990 to 2010, where three people struggle to gain the power. I think this is a kind of show that looks plain (or boring) on paper, but is complete fun and intriguing to watch as it’s more about execution, acting and direction. A plus point is that it is being made by the team behind last year’s political thriller The Chaser which was highly praised and also has many actors from that show. Go Soo stars as a man who becomes successful, all due to his skills as he started from nowhere. He raises his little sister, played by Yoon Seung Ah, after his father dies. I have to say these two look so young even when they are 30-something. Our hero falls in love with the top position rival Lee Yo Won, who is also the heiress of the chaebol group. His another rival and our heroine’s brother is Sohn Hyun Joo who is a ruthless and cunning person. Rest of the cast includes Jang Shin Young as a woman who uses her looks to get insider information and Ryu Seung Soo as a mob leader.
Empire Of Gold will premiere on July 1 on SBS, taking over the Monday-Tuesday slot from Jang Ok Jung. I can’t say I’m too excited, but I’m not unattached as well. I’ll keep an eye on this one, in case it turns out to be stellar. Check out the stills.
